|
When does the season start and how much do they practice?
The season kicks off the first week in August, with football practice 4 nights per week, approximately 2 hours each night. The first game is typically Labor Day weekend, and there are 8 games total (4 home and 4 away). Most games are on Sundays (sometimes there are 1 or 2 Saturday games).
|
When school starts, how many nights do they practice?
When school starts, the practices usually go down to 3 nights per week, for two hours (typically 6-8PM). The season ends at the end of October for the Mites. For the other teams, if they go into playoffs, the season is extended to November.
|
Can I drop my kids off at the field for practice and pick him/her up later?
If your child is playing at the first level, Mites, a parent always needs to be at the field (if not a parent, another responsible adult). It is a contact sport and an adult needs to be at the field who is responsible if the child gets hurt or needs something.
|
How is it determined at which level a kid plays (Mitey-Mite, D, C, B or A)?
In Pop Warner football, a child's playing level is determined by a weight-first, age-second policy. For safety reasons and to conform with practiced league-wide policy, all children will be placed in the lowest level allowed by the Pop Warner rules. Sharon Pop Warner will use the child's weight and playing age determined at registration to place a child on a team on a preliminary basis. The players will be weighed several times during pre-season and their playing level will be determined at the league-wide master weigh-in just before the season begins. (Note: It has been our experience that 99% of the time players remain at the team level they are originally assigned to at registration.)

|
Why does it say "Pop Warner Little Scholars" on the uniform patch?
Because Pop Warner believes that academics count. Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. (PWLS) is the only national youth sports organization in America that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play. We believe that the standards we have set give these children a sense of responsibility and an appreciation for academics and athletics that will help them develop later on in life.

What happened to the Calendars and are we still required to sell them?
In 2008, the SPW Board decided to replace our old Calendar drive with a brand new and exciting Raffle Program. The new Raffle program includes incentives for selling more raffles than the minimum required $50. Now you can earn more if you sell more. As well, we have prizes for the top three sellers.
|
|
How does the Raffle process work?
During registration, each player and cheerleader will be required to prepay $50 for 10 raffle tickets. You may either keep all the raffles for yourself or sell them to friends/relatives/coworkers for $5 each. The buyer of each calendar must fill out the bottom portion with his/her name, address, phone number and the name of the person selling the raffle ticket. It is important that the bottom half of the calendar is handed-in, or that number will not be part of the pool from which winners are drawn.

|
Why is each player and cheerleader required to pay $50 or sell 10 Cash Raffles?
Fundraising is an important part of Pop Warner football. Game day expenses are barely covered by registration costs -- registration fees cover only 70% of program costs. Fundraising needs to make up the other 30%, and we need the children and their families to help. Our continued growth each year has forced us to purchase new equipment and uniforms for our new players. Practice fields, equipment, uniforms, lights, safety equipment, playing fields for game days, storage facilities, awards, cheerleading competition fees, transportation to/from cheer competition, insurance, EMTs, Police Details and personalized sweatshirts. These are just some of the many items required to sustain the program. We are a growing organization and need to continually re-invest to ensure the safety of our children and the continued success of the program.

What is "mandatory weigh-in"? Is it really "mandatory"?
The mandatory weigh-in is a date established by the Hockomock League of which Sharon is a member. For the 2008 season, the date is Saturday, August 23rd at Brockton High School, as the following weekend is Labor Day weekend. Mandatory weigh-in is a criteria that is set for football players who participate in Pop Warner programs by the National Pop Warner Little Scholars Association which governs all Pop Warner football and cheer organizations. The requirement for this weigh-in is stressed during registration. It is readily acknowledged by all returning football players as a pre-requisite for participation after they have experienced it in their first year. The weigh-in rule was established to ensure that players are playing in the proper weight/age division for the protection of all players. The weights are certified by the league in game day books every team carries to every game. These books contain league certified documentation on each player that includes the player's picture in his/her game jersey, birth certificate and weigh-in certification. Before each game every player is weighed against the information in these books to ensure that only certified players are being dressed to participate in any given game. Again, we are trying to do everything possible for the safety of the players by ensuring that every player is participating at the proper weight/age level. Under these rules no player is allowed to play unless they are weighed and certified by the league. There are 229 teams in the Hockomock League. Each team averages 25 players, (Sharon teams actually average 31 players per team) for a total of 5,725 players that need to be weight-certified before they can play. If the league were to try to accommodate each family's individual schedule this task would be monumental and impossible. Therefore there is one mandatory weigh-in for all teams. This weigh-in does not take place in the middle of summer but as late in August as possible while still allowing all weights to be certified by the start of the season. Again, for 2007, the mandatory weigh-in is Saturday, August 25. League games begin on September 3rd (Labor Day) and the league did not want to make families commit to two days on Labor Day Weekend. When the league decided to avoid this commitment, it only left August 25th as an option. Sharon teams cannot certify thier own players, do this function cannot happen during equipment distribution. Certification is a league function.
|
Why is mandatory weigh-in on a Saturday?
It is on a Saturday because it takes the best part of the day to weigh and certify over 5,500 players and could not be accomplished during a working week day. All adults involved in Pop Warner are unpaid volunteers who have their own obligations during the working week. All returning families know this and plan accordingly. New families are made aware of this during registration, which for all teams in the Hockomock League takes place during February, March and at the latest early April, so they have time to plan around this requirement.
|
If a child misses the mandatory weigh-in, can he or she still play?
Unfortunately, if your child cannot attend the mandatory weigh-in, he/she will not be able to play the first two games of the season. There are always unavoidable conflicts and religious conflicts and thus a second alternative weigh-in is always scheduled two weeks into the season. This alternative weekend is not designed to penalize players but has been implemented to allow players a second chance to weigh in while only missing two games in an eight plus game season (often Sharon teams qualify for playoffs which accounts for those additional games beyond eight).
|
What kind of football equipment and clothing should I buy?
The town provides a helmet, shoulder pads, practice jersey and pants, game jersey and pants, mouth-guard, pant pads (5 in all), and a belt. Families are responsible for purchasing girdles (pants that accommodate hip and tail pads) and an athletic supporter. In addition, some families purchase rib protectors, especially at the Mite level, but they're not mandatory.

What is the refund policy if a child registers then drops out?
The Sharon Pop Warner and Cheerleaders Refund Policy is as follows: (a) All refund requests must be made in writing to be official, and mailed to: Sharon Pop Warner, PO Box 231, Sharon, MA 02067. E-mails will be acceptable. The date of the official postmark, or the date on the email, is the refund request date. For refund requests not made in writing, the request is unofficial and the date of the request is determined by the Treasurer of Sharon Pop Warner. (b) There will be no refunds granted for refund requests received after August 1st for a participant who has previously been in the program. (c) There will be no refunds granted for refund requests received after August 15th for a first year participant. (d) Any granted refunds will be charged a $25 administration fee per participant. A participant not granted a refund may appeal to the Executive Board for a waiver of policy by writing a letter with an explanation and mailing it to the address above.

What does the "minimum mandatory play" rule mean?
In accordance with Pop Warner rules, Sharon Pop Warner will abide by the established minimum mandatory play rules. The number of minimum plays for each player is determined by the number of players eligible for that day's game. See the following chart:

These are minimum play numbers. In most cases, players will play more than the minimum number of plays. One exception to the rule is for missed practices. The mandatory minimum play rule is affected by the player's participation at practice during the week before the game. It is up to the coach to decide whether the child will make his/her minimum plays based on how much he/she missed. These policies are as much for safety reasons as it is for learning responsibility to teammates. We do acknowledge that homework comes first, however we expect participants to find time to study and play.
|
What is Sharon Pop Warner drug and alcohol policy?
Alcohol and illegal drugs are strictly prohibited on the practice fields, game fields, and in automobiles parked in the lots of these fields. Tailgating is not allowed when alcohol is involved. Any adult responsible for a player who is found consuming alcohol or using or distributing drugs on the fields, in the parking lots or in vehicles parked in said lots, will be responsible for their player being SUSPENDED for the remainder of the season. This is a national Pop Warner policy.
|
Why do I need to buy extra merchandise for cheerleading?
Just like any other sport, cheerleading has equipment to go along with it. Just as you would be expected to buy cleats and shin pads for soccer, you need to buy appropriate sneakers.
|
Why can't my child be with her friends or on her sister's or brother's team?
Pop Warner is a national organization and as such we must follow their rules regarding placement of children on teams. There are age guidelines for each level. The Pop Warner season begins on August 1st and so July 31st is when when the age cut-offs take effect. Sometimes, a girl whose birthday is July 31st will not make the age cut-off for a particular team, even though her friends do. This year, to be on the D team, a cheerleader's birthday must be on or before 7/31/2000. To be a Mascot, a cheerleader's birthday must be on or before 7/31/2003. No exceptions are ever granted by Pop Warner regarding these age cut-offs. Rostering a girl at the incorrect level will cause all our teams to be ineligible to participate in Pop Warner. We try to accommodate family relationships whenever possible. But if a brother is a C and the sister cheerleader's birthday is 8/1/1999, they cannot be on the same team. Here in Sharon we do try to keep the grades together as much as possible. Also, we like the girls to be Mites and D's to gain valuable stunting experience for at least two years before moving up to C's and onto the competition squads.
|
What is a mascot?
A mascot is a girl whose birthday is between 8/1/2000 and 7/31/2003. She may be placed on any squad except the competition squads, at the cheer coordinator's discretion. A girl whose birthday is on or before 7/31/2000 must be a Mitey-Mite.
|
Why do I have to be at the field an hour early for each game?
This is to allow the coaches ample time for them to review the halftime routine with the girls and change things if some cheerleaders are not going to be there. If there is any time your child will have to be late (religious school, family commitment), please notify her coaches.
|
My daughter wants to have her ears pierced during the cheerleading season. Why does she have to wait?
It is very dangerous to wear any jewelry while participating in an athletic event. It is especially dangerous to do so while participating in cheerleading, which involves stunting and tumbling. Injuries caused by jewelry, especially earrings can cause serious harm, not only to the wearer, but to the other cheerleaders.
